Treatment of premature atrial contractions

The treatment of premature atrial contractions needs to be analyzed according to the patient’s condition. Most of the premature contractions without organic heart disease do not require special treatment. For patients with frequent atrial premature beats, the following drugs can be used for treatment: 1. Verapamil: a non-dihydropyridine calcium antagonist. It is suitable for patients with rapid heart rate, high blood pressure and good cardiac function who have frequent premature atrial contractions. 2. Metoprolol: It is a beta-blocker. It is suitable for patients with sympathetic hyperactivity, high blood pressure, rapid heart rate and good cardiac function. 3. Propafenone: It is a class Ic antiarrhythmic drug. It is suitable for patients with frequent atrial premature beats with rapid heart rate. Amiodarone: It is an antiarrhythmic drug that can prolong the duration of action potential. It is suitable for patients with rapid heart rate and poor cardiac function who have frequent atrial premature beats. The combination of the two is suitable for patients with more refractory and fast heartbeats with frequent premature atrial contractions. In addition, catheter ablation can be used if the symptoms caused by atrial premature beats are very pronounced, if the effect of drug therapy is unsatisfactory, if the episodes are frequent, for example, >20,000 atrial premature beats in 24 hours, and if the patient is suitable for ablation.
