Gum recession generally cannot recover on its own, but mainly lies in prevention, and gum recession needs to be treated by scientific methods. In some patients, gum recession is caused by mechanical compression. After removing the compression, such as that caused by calculus, the gums may gradually recover after removing the calculus. Most gum recession, on the other hand, is caused by periodontal disease, misaligned teeth, etc., and is more difficult or even impossible to recover. The treatment of gum recession is mainly divided into non-surgical treatment and surgical treatment. Non-surgical treatment is mainly orthodontic treatment and the control of inflammation during and after orthodontic treatment, removal of food-embedding factors, instruction on proper brushing methods and selection of appropriate brushing tools, and individual composite resin restoration or porcelain veneer reshaping to restore gum recession. Surgical treatment is mainly suitable for patients who have a strong desire to improve their appearance due to gum recession, and can perform procedures such as full mouth scaling, subgingival scraping, root surface leveling, as well as soft tissue grafting and guided tissue regeneration. If patients develop root surface sensitivity, root surface caries and bad breath after gum recession, symptomatic treatment is also needed. Therefore, patients should raise their awareness of oral health, maintain good oral hygiene, master the correct method of brushing, establish good eating habits, rinse more often after meals, and control sugar intake.
