Causes and treatment of receding gums

Gingival recession is one of the common diseases in oral clinics, which is mainly manifested by the displacement of gingival tissue at the enamel-bone boundary to the root side, causing the exposure of root surface, resulting in root sensitivity symptoms and root surface caries, etc. Gingival recession in front teeth can affect the aesthetics. The main reasons for gingival recession are: ① Incorrect brushing method: bristles are too hard and brushing force is too strong. Clinically, it is common for horizontal brushing to damage the gum tissue and cause recession. ② Periodontitis: Periodontitis can lead to alveolar bone resorption, and the height of gingival attachment is closely related to the height of alveolar bone; the more alveolar bone resorption, the more gingival recession. ③ Teeth under excessive force: some teeth bear too much force when eating, and gingival recession may also occur. ④ Misalignment of teeth: Some teeth are misaligned and the bone plates and gums of the protruding teeth are thin, so the gums can easily recede due to brushing or food scouring. Once gum recession occurs, it is difficult to restore to the previous condition. The main methods to prevent gum recession: ① Master the correct brushing method: it is recommended to use a soft-bristled toothbrush, brush with moderate force and take the correct brushing method; ② Actively treat periodontitis: patients with existing periodontal disease symptoms should receive timely systematic periodontal treatment to terminate or slow down the development of the lesion. For mild gingival recession with no clinical symptoms, treatment can be unnecessary; for more extensive or more serious gingival recession, the focus of treatment is to prevent continued aggravation; for gingival recession of individual teeth or a few teeth, if the symptoms are obvious or the patient feels seriously affected by the aesthetics, surgical methods can be considered to restore it, but not all gingival recession can be restored by surgical methods.
