Health education for children and parents of children operated for congenital heart disease

With the development of cardiac surgery technology, most children with congenital heart defects can be treated in childhood or infancy. Health education is a health care measure with low investment and high benefit. The nursing laws of many countries clearly stipulate that nursing staff have the responsibility to educate patients and patients have the right to receive health education. In the health education of children with congenital heart disease, first of all, the parents’ awareness of the disease is crucial. Among the children operated for congenital heart disease, a large proportion of them have no clinical symptoms. Parents’ attitudes are often at two extremes: they either think their children are “not sick” and do not need to take great risks for treatment, or they are in a long-term anxious psychological state. In the former case, the child may refuse treatment, while in the latter case, this attitude may influence the child and make him/her reluctant to cooperate in the treatment. Therefore, it is especially important to properly inform the parents of the child about the course of congenital heart disease, the pattern of changes, the significance of treatment, the best time for surgery and the objective risks of surgery before the operation. Secondly, parents should be encouraged to accompany the child after returning to the general ward. After heart surgery, especially in children with cardiac insufficiency, it is necessary to control the daily intake and remember the exact amount of intake. The cooperation of parents is very important, and the degree of parental cooperation depends on the effectiveness of health education provided by nursing staff. In addition, the form of health education should be different from person to person. For infants, emotional communication is the main focus, while older children can be taught some general knowledge of medical care in a certain way based on emotional communication. For parents with higher education level, they can talk more about the principles of the disease and try to get more active cooperation from them. For parents with relatively low education level, the focus should be on practical methods of operation. In conclusion, health guidance for parents of children with congenital heart disease and improvement of their knowledge about congenital heart disease are expected to prevent or reduce the incidence of complications of congenital heart disease surgery, which is beneficial to the early recovery of the children.
