Ventricular septal defect is the most common type of all congenital heart disease, accounting for approximately 25% of all cases, but it has the highest rate of self-healing of all congenital heart diseases. Some ventricular septal defects may close on their own by age 5 years and have the greatest chance of healing on their own within 1 year of birth. Small ventricular septal defects, such as perimembranous and myocardial defects, are more likely to heal, and about 7% of large ventricular septal defects that may cause heart failure may also heal spontaneously. Therefore, children with ventricular septal defects should have regular ultrasound examinations, and it is recommended that they be reviewed every six months to see if the ventricular septal defect has healed spontaneously.
