What is cough syndrome?

Cough syncope syndrome is a group of conditions in which a transient loss of consciousness occurs during coughing and can recover quickly on its own without any sequelae. The pathogenesis of cough syndrome is as follows: 1. Intrathoracic and intra-abdominal pressure rises sharply during severe coughing, which reduces venous blood return and cardiac output, causing transient cerebral ischemia; 2. Intrathoracic and intra-abdominal pressure can be transmitted to the skull through the subarachnoid space during coughing, causing a rapid rise in intracranial blood pressure and compression of cerebral vessels resulting in cerebral ischemia; 3. Tracheal spasm during violent coughing can lead to transient cerebral hypoxia, which can also produce transient syncope.
