What is secretory otitis media? What should parents of children with secretory otitis media be aware of?

  Secretory otitis media is defined as an accumulation of fluid in the middle ear that is not associated with the signs and symptoms of acute otitis media. The tympanic membrane is amber or dark in color, planes of air and fluid or bubbles are visible, and the mobility of the tympanic membrane is reduced.  Parents of children with otitis media should pay attention to: 1. Prevent spillage in young infants; 2. Avoid or reduce upper respiratory tract infections; 3. Avoid noise stimulation; 4. Avoid ototoxic drugs.
