What to do if your hemorrhoid breaks during a bowel movement

Hemorrhoids should be actively treated when they break during bowel movement, and the treatment includes conservative treatment and surgery. 1. Conservative treatment includes diet therapy, sitz bath, magnetic therapy, medication, and instrumental therapy. (1) Diet therapy: adjusting the diet structure, including the intake of adequate amount of liquid and dietary fiber, as well as the formation of good fecal habits, is important for the prevention of hemorrhoids and non-surgical treatment of hemorrhoids. (2) Sitz baths are a traditional method of treating hemorrhoids. (3) Magnetic therapy is also recommended by clinicians for the relief of symptoms during acute hemorrhoidal flare-ups or for the treatment of edema and pain after hemorrhoid surgery. (4) Drug therapy, including laxatives (such as lactulose, magnesium hydroxide, etc.), intravenous active drugs (Mai Zhi Ling, calcium hydroxybenzenesulfonate, etc.), topical topical drugs (musk hemorrhoid cream, erythromycin ointment, compound keratine suppositories) and so on. The use of drugs should follow the doctor’s instructions. (5) Instrumental treatment, conservative treatment is ineffective in patients with internal hemorrhoids of degree Ⅰ to Ⅲ and patients with internal hemorrhoids of degree Ⅳ who are unwilling to undergo surgical treatment or there are contraindications to surgery, it is recommended to use adhesive ring ligation method, or consider injection therapy (e.g., eliminating hemorrhoidal spirit, peonies times, dextrose solution, sodium chloride solution, etc.). 2. Surgical treatment: Patients with hemorrhoids of degree I to III who have not achieved acceptable results with conservative and/or instrumental treatment or patients with hemorrhoids of degree IV who are willing to undergo surgical treatment may consider surgical treatment, including hemorrhoidectomy, anastomotic hemorrhoidectomy and fixation, trans-anal hemorrhoidal artery ligation, and so on. It is recommended that patients should actively seek treatment to avoid delays.
