Can an ectopic pregnancy be aborted with medication?

Ectopic pregnancy is not recommended to be aborted by taking pills and most of the ways to deal with ectopic pregnancy are conservative treatment or surgery. An ectopic pregnancy is one in which the gestational sac is attached to a location outside the uterine cavity and continues to grow, resulting in rupture and intra-pelvic bleeding. The abortion is not recommended for women with ectopic pregnancy, as the ultrasound examination indicates that the mass is less than 4 cm in diameter and has not ruptured. If the level of human chorionic gonadotropin is less than 2,000 IU/L and there is no active bleeding in the pelvis, conservative treatment can be used. Methotrexate is applied to inhibit the function of tetrahydrofolate, which leads to chorionic villus necrosis and embryonic death, causing atrophy of the gestational sac in ectopic pregnancy and achieving the goal of treatment. In case of failure of conservative treatment, surgical treatment is needed, mainly tubal opening and embryo retrieval, which can avoid the possibility of blockage of the fallopian tubes by conservative drug treatment, and also preserve the fallopian tubes intact, especially for women with fertility requirements.
