The diagnosis of a bunion does not necessarily require an x-ray. Generally, in patients with a definite bunion deformity on the outside, if there is mainly redness and swelling of the medial aspect of the first metatarsophalangeal joint, bunions are considered to be the cause, but if necessary, blood may need to be drawn to rule out gout or infection.
