Surgery for the treatment of bunions generally has the primary goal of correcting the bunion deformity. In a small number of mild cases, simple percutaneous removal of the bony prominence is possible, which may relieve the bunion symptoms for a period of time, but is prone to recurrence as it does not address the root cause of the problem. In most cases, surgery is required to correct the bony structures of the deformity in three dimensions and to adjust the soft tissue balance around the joint to correct the deformity at its root and significantly reduce the risk of recurrence at a later stage.
