Bunions are often associated with a bunion deformity and an enlargement of the medial phalanx, but it cannot be simply assumed that the bunion is caused by an enlargement of the bone, but more importantly by the increased tension of the medial joint capsule following a dislocation of the first metatarsophalangeal joint and the increased friction of the raised phalanx against the shoe.
