What’s wrong with itchy throat and white phlegm in severe cough?

If a patient has an itchy throat and a more intense cough with white sputum, a thorough examination of the entire respiratory tract is needed. Some patients may be caused by chronic pharyngolaryngitis because of long-term excessive use of the throat, excessive smoking, alcohol, or eating spicy or irritating foods, exposure to dust or chemical irritants in work or life, all of which may lead to chronic pharyngolaryngitis and produce symptoms of cough, white sputum, and itchy throat. Patients with recurrent episodes of sore throat, dry throat, burning sensation in the pharynx, or cough need to have a detailed examination of the nasal cavity to see if the patient has a combined nasal sinusitis infection, or allergic rhinitis. Auscultation and imaging of the trachea and lungs should also be performed to not rule out infectious diseases of the lower respiratory tract. Therefore, if a pregnant woman has symptoms of severe throat itch, dryness, or cough with phlegm, she must go to the hospital in order to receive appropriate treatment.
