What is capsule endoscopy all about?

  I. Understanding Capsule Endoscopy Capsule endoscopes are endoscopes shaped like capsules and are used for the examination and diagnosis of intestinal diseases. Similar in size to a cod liver oil capsule, the capsule takes continuous pictures in the subject’s intestine through a built-in miniature camera and transmits the picture information wirelessly to a data recorder outside the body, where the doctor then analyzes and diagnoses the images. Capsule endoscopy can be understood as a single-use miniature digital camera with a working time of about 11-13 hours, which will generally be excreted with feces after 8-72 hours of swallowing. Capsule endoscopy has long been a “blind spot” in the clinical diagnosis of gastrointestinal diseases because of the limitations of traditional endoscopy, which is often difficult to reach the small intestine with a length of 5-7 meters. Now, capsule endoscopy has greatly expanded the field of view of digestive tract examination. Capsule endoscopy is suitable for people with unexplained gastrointestinal bleeding, anemia, Crohn’s disease, small intestinal tumors, chronic diarrhea, small intestinal polyps, drug-related enteritis, intestinal parasites, and observation of intestinal disease efficacy or after surgery. In short, capsule endoscopy can be done for subjects with suspected small bowel disease. And capsule endoscopy can also be considered for the physical examination of high-risk groups. Although capsule endoscopy has many advantages, it is not recommended for patients with dysphagia, suspected small bowel obstruction, strictures, diverticulae and fistulas, and especially for patients who cannot undergo surgery. Fourth, the advantages and disadvantages of capsule endoscopy Capsule endoscopy is small and easy to swallow; it can capture the largest visible mucosal area; it uses biocompatible materials and is safe to take; it does not require hospitalization and does not affect your normal life and work. It is one of the best means to diagnose gastrointestinal diseases with single use, no chance of cross infection such as hepatitis and AIDS, painless, non-invasive and no risk of perforation. The biggest advantage of capsule endoscopy is that it is painless. Patients only need to swallow the miniature capsule and wear the recorder, no intubation and anesthesia are needed, and it does not interfere with work and study during the examination, and they can leave the hospital and move freely. The preparation before capsule endoscopy is similar to colonoscopy. The day before the examination, you can eat light and liquid food, fast for 12 hours before the examination, and if necessary, you can make some preparations to clean the digestive tract and take foam dispersant before the examination according to the doctor’s instruction.
