Diet for patients with upper gastrointestinal bleeding

Gastrointestinal bleeding is a common clinical condition that often endangers patients’ lives due to its rapid onset and poor diagnosis. Gastrointestinal bleeding is usually divided into upper and lower GI bleeding. Upper GI bleeding refers to bleeding in the GI tract above the flexural ligament, including the esophagus, stomach and duodenum. The main cause of upper gastrointestinal bleeding is improper diet on a regular basis. For example, patients with peptic ulcer and chronic gastritis mostly have a history of uncontrolled diet, irregular hunger and satiety, hot and cold disorders, or excessive consumption of fatty, spicy food and cold food. Long-term improper diet will affect the function of the stomach, damage the defense barrier of the gastric mucosa and cause lesions in the gastric mucosa. Nutritional diet in different periods: 1. In case of massive bleeding in the digestive tract, especially in the upper gastrointestinal tract, temporary fasting and rapid intravenous infusion of fluids should be carried out. In case of severe shock, blood transfusion should be prepared. For a small amount of bleeding, a liquid diet is appropriate. When conditions permit, milk should be the main food for a short period of time. Milk can neutralize stomach acid and help to stop bleeding. In addition to milk, a liquid diet can also be used such as soy milk, rice soup and lotus root powder. 2.Recovery period Generally, 24 hours after the bleeding stops, a small amount of liquid diet can be given, and close observation of whether there is re-bleeding. If the situation is stable, gradually increase the amount of liquid diet, and change to semi-liquid diet and soft food as appropriate, until normal diet. Diet modification: Drinking milk regularly can prevent upper gastrointestinal bleeding. The upper gastrointestinal bleeding caused by ulcer disease, mostly due to acidic gastric juice pinching the stomach wall, damage to blood vessels, in order to prevent excessive secretion of gastric acid at night during the peak secretion of gastric acid, drink a cup of hot milk at bedtime, can protect the gastric mucosa and neutralize gastric acid, and can effectively prevent recurrent gastric bleeding. It is advisable to eat more fresh vegetables and fruits. Anyone who has a tendency to bleed, it is advisable to eat more food containing vitamin c and vitamin k.
