In ancient Greece, the phrase “Know thyself” was carved into the stones of the temples; however, it was only in 1995 that scholar Daniel Goleman first introduced the concept of “emotional intelligence,” which he defined as “the ability to understand and grasp oneself and the actions and words of others. From a medical science perspective, the secret of emotional intelligence is actually the secret of the amygdala. The amygdala is a cluster of cells in the deep part of the brain whose function is to receive stimuli from the outside world for the body’s various senses and then act as the human emotional center to call the shots. When the amygdala finds that a stimulus is disgusting, fearful or possibly harmful, it will immediately issue instructions through the brain’s neural network system, the body will make defense, avoidance or combat preparations; and when it finds that a stimulus is happy, beautiful or caring, humans will make a very different response, showing a smile, joy or happiness. Think about it, when the loud roar of a jet overhead, we will not hesitate to make the action of covering our ears; and young men see a beautiful girl, the pupils will immediately become large, that is the amygdala in play. In modern society, emotional intelligence is as important as IQ. Better emotional intelligence helps work smoothly and people get along with each other; on the other hand, it can only bring bad effects to career and family. We all admire heroes with a will of steel, facing pressure and temptation, they never compromise; we also like to get along with emotional people, talk with them, and work with them. In fact, everyone in real life wants to be wiser, richer, more respected, and, well, more irreplaceable than others. When our amygdala is working properly, our emotional intelligence is just as good: we feel better and better, we have more confidence, stamina, courage and love; but when the amygdala is working abnormally, disaster strikes immediately, and we become frustrated, irritable, even full of hatred and violence. Many neurosurgical patients have emotional, personality and affective disorders, which bring a heavy burden to themselves, their families and society. This method has been proved by a large number of cases: this method not only targets the lesion, but also preserves the language, emotion and other high human functions to the maximum extent, the effect is quite satisfactory. With the development of medical science, medical doctors for the amygdala research further in-depth, and finally make the mystery of emotional intelligence is gradually unveiled, human will certainly embark on a more perfect and better future.
