Neurosurgery’s new weapon, the DD Gamma Knife.

What is Gamma Knife? Gamma Knife is a kind of therapeutic equipment integrating modern computer technology, stereotactic technology and surgical technology. It uses gamma rays to irradiate the lesions through geometric focusing, destroying the tissues in the target point, while the rays pass through the normal tissues of the human body with almost no harm. So the gamma knife is not really a scalpel, is to use radiosurgery instead of a scalpel, its therapeutic irradiation range and the normal tissue demarcation is very obvious, the edge of the knife like cutting, people image called “gamma knife”. In the treatment of intracranial diseases in the past, doctors focused on how to remove as many lesions as possible, which brought about a variety of craniotomy complications seriously affect the patient’s quality of life, as the so-called “see the tumor, not see the person”. In today’s era when people pay more and more attention to the quality of life, doctors are required to set up new treatment concepts and make full use of the latest scientific and technological means to improve the efficacy of treatment and reduce the occurrence of complications at the same time. Since the 1990s, Gamma Knife, a safe and effective treatment method, has been more and more widely used in the treatment of intracranial lesions remaining and recurring after surgery, especially for patients with high risk of deep brain surgery or those who cannot tolerate craniotomy due to their general condition, which reflects the superiority of Gamma Knife more and more. What kind of superiority does Gamma Knife have compared with surgery? The treatment process is non-invasive, non-bleeding, no need for anesthesia and special preoperative preparation and medication, and is carried out under awake and painless conditions. It is not affected by age, physical condition and concomitant diseases. The treatment is simple and time-saving, the whole process takes about 2~3 hours, and patients usually do not need to be hospitalized. However, Gamma Knife cannot replace all brain surgeries, and any treatment has its indications. Since it takes quite some time for the effect of Gamma Knife treatment to appear, when the diameter of tumors and other lesions is large, it is not suitable to prefer Gamma Knife treatment, and surgical treatment should be considered first. Generally speaking, Gamma Knife is suitable for intracranial cerebrovascular malformations of small and medium diameters as well as various benign and malignant tumors, such as pituitary tumors, craniopharyngiomas, acoustic neuromas, meningiomas, cerebral gliomas, brain metastatic tumors, and tumors of the pineal region. In terms of functional neurological disorders, it can effectively relieve trigeminal neuralgia attacks. Some diseases require comprehensive treatment with multiple therapeutic methods, for example, lesions that cannot be completely cut by surgery need further treatment by Gamma Knife, and some malignant intracranial tumors need to be supplemented with traditional whole-brain radiotherapy in order to reduce recurrence after Gamma Knife treatment. As an early domestic and the first gamma knife treatment research center in Jiangsu Province, we have been actively exploring in this field. Recently, the combination of large-dose destruction of Gamma Knife and the theory of traditional dose division, for malignant tumors in the deep part of the brain with large volume to take Gamma Knife fractionated treatment of the subject of the research has achieved remarkable results, the treatment of dozens of patients are efficacious.
