Many patients have symptoms of “hyperthyroidism”, such as palpitations, hand tremors, weight loss and thick neck, and when they come to the hospital to have their thyroid function checked, they are given anti-hyperthyroid treatment in a hurry, resulting in severe hypothyroidism. First of all, we should clarify a few concepts: thyrotoxicosis is not equal to hyperthyroidism. Thyrotoxicosis refers to a group of clinical syndromes caused by excessive thyroxine in the blood circulation, resulting in increased excitability and hypermetabolism in the nervous, circulatory and digestive systems. According to the functional status of the thyroid gland, thyrotoxicosis can be classified into hyperthyroidism and non-hyperthyroidism types. Hyperthyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid gland itself produces too much thyroid hormone and causes thyrotoxicosis, which simply means that the thyroid gland synthesizes more thyroid. This must be treated with western anti-hyperthyroid medication. Non-hyperthyroidism types include destructive thyrotoxicosis and the use of exogenous thyroid hormones. Destructive means that the thyroid follicles are destroyed by inflammation and an excess of thyroid stored in the follicles is released as a result of blood. This type of disease does not require western medicine to combat hyperthyroidism, and can be cured by improving the inflammation of the thyroid gland with herbal treatment. The intake of some “diet pills” with added thyroxine can be cured by stopping the medication.
