Learn to relax and prevent mental illness

In recent years, in gastroenterology clinics, we often see patients who come to the clinic with complaints of digestive system diseases, some with abdominal pain, some with diarrhea, and some with loss of appetite…all sorts of symptoms. However, after careful examination, there is nothing wrong with their digestive system; or some problems are found in the digestive system, but these problems do not explain the patient’s main symptoms; or after regular treatment, the patient’s symptoms are not significantly relieved. During the consultation, the patient often repeatedly emphasizes that he or she is in great pain and will tell the doctor that he or she has been seen in several hospitals and has used many medications, but they are not effective or have no effect at all. At this point, if the doctor asks you in detail, the patient will often tell you that he or she is often insomniac and dreamy, irritable, and uninterested in anything. Such patients often have different degrees of depression or anxiety when analyzed by the psychological scale, and after appropriate anti-anxiety treatment, the patient’s symptoms will be significantly relieved. With the development of economy and culture, people’s life is getting faster and faster, work pressure is increasing, interpersonal relationship is tense and loneliness is intensifying. Under the combined effect of these factors, many people will develop psychological problems to varying degrees, which seriously affects people’s quality of life. According to Chinese medicine, the liver is the master of emotions, and negative emotions acting on the body for a long time can lead to liver qi stagnation. The liver is wood and the spleen and stomach are earth. The five elements theory of Chinese medicine believes that wood can overcome earth, which explains why anxiety disorders can appear with digestive system symptoms as the main manifestation. It is reported that the prevalence of moderate and above depressive disorders is 23.7% and anxiety disorders is 34.8% among inpatients of internal medicine in China, among which gastroenterology, neurology and cardiology oncology are the most common. It has been pointed out that adverse factors such as education level, social class, family atmosphere and more marital problems are high risk factors for depression and anxiety disorders. Those with lower education level, high life stress, family disharmony, and unhappy marriage are much more likely to suffer from anxiety-depression disorder. One study showed that anxiety-depression disorder is more common in women than men, which is related to biological, psychological, and social factors unique to women, who have a relatively poorer ability to withstand stressful events than men, and is closely related to estrogen and progesterone. Clinically, we have also observed that some secondary school students may also experience varying degrees of anxiety disorders due to academic stress and pressure to advance to higher education, often manifesting as loss of appetite, abdominal pain and bloating, irritability and insomnia. In conclusion, depressive and anxiety disorders can occur in all age groups, but are most common in middle-aged women. Misdiagnosis of psychological disorders by non-psychologists is common in all countries because: most patients present with physical disorders, which leads to misdiagnosis of physical disorders by physicians; clinicians lack the necessary knowledge and diagnostic ability to deal with psychological disorders; and psychological disorders have not yet received the attention and concern of most non-psychologists clinicians. Therefore, it is necessary to improve clinicians’ ability to diagnose and handle psychological disorders as soon as possible, so that patients can receive correct diagnosis and timely treatment. In fact, anxiety and depression are not terrible, as long as one can learn to relax the mind and relieve stress, coupled with appropriate medication, most patients can be well controlled. Physical exercise, stop smoking and limit alcohol, cultivate good hobbies, such as music, painting, calligraphy, etc., can effectively relax the spirit and relieve stress. Medication can be used to relax the liver and relieve depression of Chinese herbs, such as Zhuangyao pill, Chaihu sparing the liver, relieving depression pill, etc., and western medicine can choose Delixin (flupirtin melitrexin), etc., all have good effect. There is a western proverb: a clown in town is better than a dozen doctors. As long as we can keep a smile on our face, relaxed spirit, optimism, timely release of stress, appropriate venting of emotions, we can enjoy life to the fullest and away from mental illness.
