Many patients are concerned about the ocular side effects of hydroxychloroquine and even abandon its use. It is true that long-term use of Fenral may cause retinal pigment epithelial and neuroretinal degeneration, but the probability of this is very low, with an incidence of only 3-4 per 10,000 according to the clinical practice in the last 30 years abroad. If retinal damage occurs, it may be caused by a dose of more than 6.5 mg/kg/D or a daily dose of more than 400 mg, and long-term use for more than several years. For patients who have been taking hydroxychloroquine for a long time, it is recommended to have an eye examination every six months. Patients can also undergo ophthalmic self-monitoring (Amsler grid).
