When you see “hand tremor”, many people think of Parkinson’s disease at first, but in fact, hand tremor is not necessarily Parkinson’s disease, but also other diseases, such as idiopathic tremor, hyperthyroidism, etc. So how to distinguish it? Let’s hear more about it from Prof. Wang. Parkinson’s disease Parkinson’s disease hand tremor is commonly seen as a “pill-rolling” or “bill-counting” action of the thumb and index finger. The tremor usually extends from unilateral to bilateral limbs, and is obvious at rest but decreases during activity. Idiopathic tremor The only symptom of idiopathic tremor is trembling of the limbs, which occurs during movement or in a certain posture and decreases or disappears at rest. Hyperthyroidism If hand tremors are accompanied by symptoms such as weight loss, excessive sweating, protruding eyes, and rapid heartbeat, timely serum thyroxine and thyroid ultrasound should be performed at the hospital to confirm the diagnosis and provide accurate treatment. Alcohol withdrawal symptoms Long-term heavy drinking can cause chronic alcoholism, that is, alcohol dependence syndrome. When in alcohol withdrawal, patients may experience tremors in the limbs, which may be accompanied by inattention, disorientation, mental abnormalities, hallucinations and other delirium manifestations. Cerebellar lesions Patients with cerebellar lesions may develop intentional tremor, which means that the closer the patient is to the target object, the more pronounced the tremor becomes. Patients with cerebellar lesions may also develop ataxia such as nystagmus, speech changes, and unstable standing and walking. Psychogenic tremor is most often seen after adverse life events and is more common in middle-aged and elderly women, and may reduce or stop on its own after the emotions have subsided. It should be emphasized that before diagnosing the disease, it is necessary to exclude all kinds of organic lesions causing the tremor of the limbs. Many side effects of drugs can cause limb tremors, so in terms of medication must be strictly in accordance with the doctor’s instructions, do not increase, discontinue or extend the course of medication without authorization, if the limb tremors due to medication, you can promptly seek medical advice, under the guidance of the doctor to adjust the drug, regular medication.
