Abstract: The pain in the pharynx was thought to be inflammation of the pharynx, but when I checked the pharynx on my own, it was neither red nor swollen, but the pain was severe and unbearable. I had visited a clinic and was only aware of inflammation of the pharynx and underwent treatment but the symptoms worsened. Therefore, he came to the clinic and was diagnosed with acute epiglottitis, an acute disease of bacterial infection that can cause blockage of the respiratory tract leading to asphyxia, which seriously affects life and health. Treatment was given with antibiotics, hormones, and nebulized inhalation, and symptoms such as pain and pharyngeal obstruction disappeared after treatment.
Basic information】Male, 46 years old
Disease Type】Acute epiglottitis
Hospital】Anhui Huabei General Miner’s Hospital
Time】May 2022
Treatment plan】Medication (cefotaxime sodium for injection + metronidazole injection + dexamethasone sodium phosphate for injection) + nebulized inhalation (budesonide suspension for inhalation)
Treatment period】5 days of inpatient treatment
Treatment effect】No pain and blockage in the pharynx, no redness and swelling in the epiglottis, normal elevation, no congestion and swelling in the vocal cords
I. Initial consultation
The patient felt pain in the pharynx after exertion 3 days ago, and when he visually examined the pharynx at home, there was no redness or swelling, so he thought it might be caused by exertion and might be relieved after rest. During the interview, the patient had a painful facial expression, pain in the finger pharynx, and was reluctant to speak.
II. Treatment history
After admission, the patient underwent indirect laryngoscopy, which showed that the epiglottis was highly congested, swollen, and hemispheric in shape, and the lift of the epiglottis was limited, and the diagnosis of acute epiglottitis was finally confirmed. After diagnosis, the patient was given cefotaxime sodium for injection, metronidazole injection, dexamethasone sodium phosphate for injection intravenously, and also nebulized inhalation with budesonide suspension for inhalation, and a tracheotomy kit was prepared for urgent use in case of airway obstruction.
Third, the effect of treatment
Acute epiglottitis is an acute disease that can cause airway obstruction, leading to asphyxia and seriously affecting the life and health of the patient. The patient was discharged after 5 days of combined treatment with antibiotics, hormones intravenously, and nebulized inhalation. The pain and blockage in the pharynx disappeared, and there was no pain in eating and drinking. Indirect laryngoscopy suggested no redness and swelling of the epiglottis, normal elevation, and no congestion and swelling of the vocal cords.
IV. Notes
We are glad that the patient was cured after treatment. Patients are advised to take more rest in life and avoid staying up late and exerting themselves so as not to cause a decrease in resistance. In terms of diet, it is necessary to maintain a light diet and avoid spicy and stimulating foods, such as chili peppers, etc. It is also necessary to quit smoking and alcohol to reduce the stimulation to the throat. Patients should avoid catching a cold and need to exercise more in life to enhance their physical fitness to avoid the re-emergence of acute epiglottitis.
V. Personal insight
For minor inflammation of the pharynx can not explain the severe pharyngeal pain, need to promptly consult a doctor, need to routinely check the pharynx, especially the epiglottis, timely detection of acute epiglottitis. However, it should be noted that after acute epiglottitis is diagnosed, hospitalization is necessary because the disease progresses rapidly and can quickly lead to suffocation, respiratory distress, and even asphyxia, which can affect life. Timely treatment will achieve good results; if the condition is delayed, it may lead to suffocation or even death. In this case, the patient was treated promptly and the disease was cured.
