Stress Urinary Incontinence Chinese Medicine Treatment

New treatment for stress incontinence electroacupuncture pubic nerve stimulation Stress incontinence refers to the involuntary flow of urine from the urethra when there is a sudden increase in abdominal pressure, such as coughing, sneezing, laughing, running, or strenuous activity, when there is no usual state of incontinence. It is mostly seen in middle-aged women who have given birth. Stress urinary incontinence can be treated conservatively by Western medicine, which has the advantage of being safe and minimally invasive, with a much lower incidence and severity of complications than surgical treatment. Conservative treatment consists of pelvic floor exercises, electrical stimulation, various vaginal and urethral devices, and medications. Of these, electrical stimulation is considered to be the most effective of the conservative treatments. However, the currently used electrical stimulation therapy is weak and less effective because it uses vaginal or anal surface electrodes. Stress urinary incontinence can also be treated with acupuncture in Chinese medicine, which has the advantage of being safe, convenient, and free of side effects and complications. However, because of the general acupuncture method, it is difficult to induce rhythmic contraction of the pelvic floor muscles by excitation of the nerves in the pubic area and enhance the strength of the pelvic floor muscles to improve urinary control, as in the case of electrical stimulation. There is a new therapy: electroacupuncture pubic nerve stimulation therapy, which combines Chinese and Western medicine, has been introduced. This therapy uses a special acupuncture method for four specific acupuncture points in the sacral area and electrical stimulation, which can directly excite the pubic nerves and induce rhythmic contraction of the pelvic floor muscles, so it can achieve better therapeutic effects than the above two treatments. Generally, the symptoms can be reduced after one treatment, and on average, 71% of the patients’ symptoms disappear after 21 treatments. Many patients who are ready to undergo surgery have been spared the pain of surgery after treatment with this therapy. Indication: Stress incontinence after childbirth and birth injury, difficult labor, hysterectomy, prostate surgery, and before and after menopause.
