Is it dangerous to have the umbilical cord wrapped around your neck for 2 weeks?

A 2-week cord bypass is dangerous and may lead to fetal variability and deceleration, and in severe cases, fetal distress. In more severe cases, a 2-week cord bypass can cause abnormalities in the baby’s blood supply and oxygen delivery, which may even endanger the baby’s life. However, when the cord is wrapped around the neck for 2 weeks and the fetal movement is within the normal range, the pregnant woman does not need to be overly nervous, and fetal distress does not usually occur. In some cases, fetal movement may unwind the umbilical cord, and in some cases, the umbilical cord may form a true knot, which is caused by the umbilical cord forming a loop in the uterine cavity and the fetal movement crossing the loop, but it is rare and the clinical incidence is 0.5%-3%. Therefore, pregnant women should undergo regular ultrasound examinations and closely monitor fetal movements throughout pregnancy. In addition, when the fetal cord is wrapped around the neck for 2 weeks, pregnant women are advised to keep sleeping on their left side to make the baby more comfortable and have more space to unwind the cord. Appropriate exercise should also be performed under the guidance of the doctor to avoid aggravating the fetal cord winding.
