If the skin of a burn is torn off, there may be a risk of infection, which can be done by disinfecting the wound with a less irritating disinfectant such as iodophor, using a sterile oil dressing, unless the dressing is wet or smelly, or there are other signs of infection, it is not necessary to change the dressing frequently to avoid damaging the new epithelium. If the wound has become infected, the dressing should be changed diligently to remove purulent secretions and keep the wound clean to promote healing.
