Subhypophyseal herniation of the cerebellum is generally considered to be due to a delayed development of the posterior cranial fossa and crowding of the posterior cranial fossa due to a malformation of the axonal mesoderm, resulting in obstruction of the CSF circulation in the foramen magnum region.
