Thalidomide

Formulation and specifications: (1) Tablets: 25mg; (2) Capsules: 25mg
Indications: Neoplastic leprosy.
Key points for rational drug use:
1. Thalidomide can cause heart rate slowdown and third degree atrioventricular block in severe cases.
2. Use with caution in patients with allergic reactions to this product. Thalidomide is teratogenic and is contraindicated in pregnant and lactating women and children. Other adverse reactions include slowed heart rate, rash, constipation, peripheral neuropathy, drowsiness and deep vein thrombosis, which can be alleviated by dose reduction and adjunctive medications.
3. Bortezomib has synergistic effects with thalidomide.
4. In patients with multiple myeloma treated with thalidomide in combination with dexamethasone, the risk of deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism is significantly higher. Signs and symptoms due to thrombosis need to be closely monitored and prophylactic anticoagulation is recommended in combination with a high risk of thrombosis.
5. Maintenance therapy with thalidomide alone is not recommended in patients at high cytogenetic risk.
6. Drowsiness and vertigo may occur after administration. Driving is not recommended and should be taken before bedtime.
*7. Thalidomide can be used in patients with primary and refractory relapsed multiple myeloma (approved for primary as well as refractory relapsed myeloma treatment in most foreign countries).
