Lung cancer chemotherapy, is it really that scary?

Lung cancer is currently the most prevalent malignant tumor in the world, and more than 80% of patients are already in advanced stage when diagnosed, basically losing the chance of surgical resection and radical treatment. Therefore, chemotherapy is the cornerstone and core of treatment for these patients, and other treatments basically play an auxiliary role, although there is the emergence of targeted therapy, and some patients can choose targeted oral drug therapy in the first line, but still cannot replace the cornerstone position of chemotherapy. However, in reality, many patients and their families are very fearful of and resistant to chemotherapy, and “fear chemotherapy”. The reason for this is still the lack of knowledge and awareness of chemotherapy as a treatment, so much so that they listen to rumors or misunderstandings. In the past, chemotherapy was feared and feared because of its large toxic side effects, especially nausea and vomiting, which could not be alleviated in time due to the limited choice of anti-vomiting drugs and treatment methods; in addition, the problem of hair loss after chemotherapy. In fact, most of the chemotherapy drugs used in the past for lung cancer were first and second generation chemotherapy drugs such as adriamycin, cyclophosphamide, acephalosporin, etc. The toxic side effects such as nausea and vomiting and hair loss were indeed obvious, but nowadays, most of the chemotherapy drugs used for lung cancer are third generation chemotherapy drugs such as gemcitabine, norviburn, paclitaxel, doxorubicin, elitecan, etc. combined with platinum-based two-drug combination chemotherapy regimens, and their toxic side effects have been significantly reduced compared with those in the past. There is rarely vomiting of III to IV degree and only occasional hair loss. Moreover, some highly selective central anti-vomiting drugs such as ondansetron, toltesetron, etc., can basically achieve vomit-free chemotherapy; and hair loss is generally reversible, harmless, do not care too much, if hair loss is obvious, can also be used to wig through a period of time. As for other side effects, doctors will also take appropriate measures to alleviate them according to the specific situation, so there is no need to worry too much. In fact, there are some chemotherapy regimens that are basically less toxic and well tolerated, such as the pemetrexed regimen, which is a clinical priority for patients with non-small cell lung cancer. Overall, as long as the patient’s behavior score is within 2 and there are no contraindications to chemotherapy, chemotherapy is only a conventional drug treatment for patients with advanced lung cancer, and like any other disease treatment, there is no need to worry too much about fear, and it is not as scary as rumors!
