How to treat an enlarged thyroid gland

An enlarged thyroid gland can have a significant impact on a person’s health and therefore needs to be treated promptly. At this stage, the main treatments for the thyroid gland are medication, surgery, TSH suppression, radioactive iodine 131 and diet. When the thyroid gland is enlarged, but the function of the thyroid gland is not completely affected, you can take medication to treat it. The medication can take a long time, and the patient needs to undergo normal monthly physical tests and regular follow-ups while taking the medication. For patients with more serious symptoms, such as difficulty in breathing or eating, surgery is required, which is fast, but requires removal of the thyroid gland and therefore requires lifelong medication to replace the function of the thyroid gland. These two methods are more effective in treating goiter, but they also have a longer course of treatment and need to be adhered to. In addition, dietary treatment is required because the main cause of goiter is the lack of iodine in the body. Therefore, it is important to eat foods with high iodine content, such as kelp, purple cabbage, green leafy vegetables, meat, eggs, etc. in the usual diet. The treatment of goiter cannot be cured in three or five days, but usually takes more than 6 months, so patients should have enough patience and confidence and follow the doctor’s instructions strictly during the treatment.
