If the nail cap is broken, the new nail can grow normally as long as the nail root is intact, usually starting to grow 7-10 days after the break and taking about 1-2 months to grow completely. With half of the nail cap broken off, the patient will need to have the remaining nail trimmed to allow the new growth to grow forward normally. If the nail bed is exposed, the injured finger should be disinfected, wrapped with gauze and protected from water to prevent infection. If the nail is growing and there is significant pain or redness, it is recommended that the patient be seen by a hospital surgeon to disinfect the injured area or take oral anti-inflammatory medication as prescribed by the doctor. During the nail growth process, patients should also avoid spicy and stimulating foods, seafood and other foods to avoid affecting the recovery of the wound. In addition, patients are advised to trim their nails frequently and not to leave them too long to avoid external forces that may cause nail breakage and injury.
