Combination of Mulberry and Apricot Soup and Xiao Chai Hu Tang for treating cough

  He, female, 74 years old, was seen on November 24, 2015.  Complaint: cough for half a month. The patient reported a characteristic of coughing: that is, coughing after every spicy diet with a little yellow sputum that is difficult to cough, usually less coughing, because her diet is usually spicy, now every time she eats spicy food, she coughs and thinks it is bitter, and she sees a dark red throat, no sore throat, no dry mouth or bitterness, no constipation, poor sleep, dark red tongue, slightly greasy yellow moss, slippery left pulse and large right pulse. There is no abnormality in the lung auscultation. Past history: postoperative gastric cancer, high blood lipids and blood glucose, hypertensive disease.  Diagnosis: cough.  Identification: dry heat offending the lung.  The formula is based on the combination of Mulberry and Apricot Soup and Xiao Chai Hu Tang: 15 g of frosted mulberry leaves, 15 g of almonds, 15 g of northern sage, 15 g of zhebei mu, 10 g of mountain gardenia, 10 g of tempeh, 15 g of Chai Hu, 10 g of light scutellaria, 10 g of ginger and half-hsia, 5 g of roasted licorice, and 15 g of Qian Hu. 5 doses in water, 1 dose daily.  The dry climate in winter, coupled with the spicy hot bo thick taste, a long time will produce heat, up fumigation and steam and lung, resulting in the loss of lung purification and cough, but fortunately the stool is not yet constipated, if the stool is constipated non-passing the internal organs can not be, and now the invisible dry heat in the lungs, so the use of mulberry apricot soup lightly promote warm dry, cool and stop cough. In this case, there is no evidence of Shaoyang, so why is Xiao Chai Hu Tang used in combination?  Professor Liu Zhilong believes that although this patient’s cough does not have Shaoyang evidence such as dry mouth, bitter mouth, dizziness, and stringy pulse, it has the Shaoyang disease characteristic of “resting sometimes”; secondly, although the patient only has invisible dryness and heat accumulating in the lung, his diet is usually spicy and will spread to the three jiao over time, so Xiao Chai Hu Tang is used to clear the three jiao and prevent the problem before it occurs.  Professor Liu Zhilong likes to use Xiao Chai Hu Tang in clinical practice, often for the elderly and children, because the elderly and children have weak internal organs and insufficient positive qi, which makes them susceptible to evil qi, and the disease is often lingering and difficult to be cured, so the addition of Xiao Chai Hu Tang can support positive qi and dispel evil qi. He often says that Xiao Chai Hu Tang is suitable for “pre-morbid syndrome” and “post-morbid syndrome”.  The so-called “pre-menstrual syndrome”, for example, some patients will describe a series of discomfort before the onset of menstruation, for example, at this time the patient may feel that he or she is about to catch a cold. This state is the “pre-sickness syndrome” and can be treated with Xiao Chai Hu Tang.  After a cold, cough, or fever, some people’s symptoms are clearly relieved, but they feel uncomfortable, but they can’t tell what is uncomfortable, which is the “post-sickness syndrome” and can be treated with Xiao Chai Hu Tang.
