Questions about whether fatty liver can be cured

As a doctor, I often encounter patients in the clinic who ask me, “Doctor, I’ve been suffering from fatty liver for 7 or 8 years, this disease can’t be cured, right?” Whenever I hear such questions I feel puzzled: why do patients with fatty liver feel that fatty liver is a disease that cannot be cured? Well, today I would like to share my opinion on this issue. First of all, fatty liver is prevalent in about 10% of the population in China, and the prevalence of fatty liver in some first-tier cities is 15-20%, because of the slow onset of the disease and insidious symptoms, most patients do not know enough about its harmful effects, so the treatment is not dedicated or even ignored. Nowadays, in many foreign countries, the risk of fatty liver has been in the first place in the field of liver disease. Especially at this stage of life expectancy, fatty liver can cause serious and fatal damage to people over 50 years old. Once again, there are many causes of fatty liver, and first of all, the patient needs to know the cause of his/her own fatty liver, which is initially summarized to include: viral infections, drug-related liver disease, impaired fat metabolism due to hyperlipidemia, etc., toxic factors such as alcohol, auto-metabolic diseases, pregnancy, etc. Fatty liver is now internationally divided into alcoholic fatty liver and non-alcoholic fatty liver, the former requires abstinence from alcohol, the latter may have “three highs” (hypertension, hyperlipidemia, hyperglycemia – diabetes), if the cause of fatty liver can be found, then the majority of fatty liver is completely curable. However, depending on the degree of fat deposition in the liver, the treatment time for fatty liver may vary. For those who can eradicate the cause of fatty liver soon, the fatty liver itself can be controlled and cured within 3 to 9 months. If the cause cannot be found or eradicated quickly (e.g., unexplained fatty liver or chronic diseases such as diabetes), because fatty liver is often only a local manifestation of such diseases in the liver, the recovery of fatty liver can be facilitated by basic treatment and accurate and careful drug therapy that can improve intrahepatic lipid metabolism as soon as possible, but may take 1 or 1.5 years to treat, and this treatment is comprehensive and requires consideration of the etiology of the disease and other factors. The treatment is chaotic, discontinuous and unsystematic, and often the patients themselves are taking drugs that are described in the manual as having a therapeutic effect on fatty liver, while fundamentally ignoring the search for the cause and the continuity of treatment (the phenomenon of taking drugs for a while and stopping them for a period of time is very common), as the so-called ” The phenomenon of “three days of fishing and two days of sunbathing” is also very common. As mentioned above, almost 95% of fatty liver is completely curable, and most of them can be eliminated within 6-9 months as long as the treatment is adhered to. Therefore, if you have fatty liver, you should seek professional medical help and know that fatty liver can be cured, but it is important to persist and scientific treatment.
