Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a psychiatric disorder that is difficult to treat, on the one hand because the treatment is not very effective and on the other hand it is easy to relapse after treatment. Since there are many patients with OCD who come to my clinic for treatment. Some questions are often asked. Now I will answer the more common questions here. I hope to help those patients who cannot come to my clinic for treatment. 1. Do I need treatment for OCD? For those whose OCD symptoms are not very serious and do not affect their lives, studies and work, medication is not necessary. You can consult with a psychologist for guidance. If the condition is serious, medication can be considered. However, once medication is used, you must be prepared for long-term treatment. The whole treatment may take up to several years. It can cost hundreds of dollars per month. Do not give up halfway. 2.Does OCD need psychological treatment? OCD can be treated psychologically, but the effectiveness of treatment depends on the severity of the disease and the treating doctor. I don’t know much about the details. I can’t introduce a psychotherapist. 3. Do I need psychotherapy along with medication? As far as I can see from the treatment of many patients with OCD, there is basically no need for psychotherapy at the same time. The medication can have a good therapeutic effect. 4.How can medication be used for OCD? Currently, the main medication for OCD is the new generation of antidepressants. The key to treatment is the choice of medication and the high dose of medication. The general dose needs to be larger than the dose of antidepressant treatment. It also needs to be long enough. 5.What is the efficacy of OCD treatment? For OCD in general, the effectiveness of medication (complete remission or no impact on life) can reach about 60%. Some patients who are difficult to treat may have frequent fluctuations in their condition. A small number may not be effective. I have many patients on this page who have had very good results. 6. What is the duration of treatment for OCD? OCD generally shows significant improvement in about 4-8 weeks after the treatment medication reaches a sufficient dose. Later, it is necessary to maintain high dose treatment for more than six months. Only then can you consider reducing the dose appropriately, but not too low. Then long-term maintenance. The duration of maintenance needs to be determined by the severity of the OCD prior to treatment and the length of time the OCD has existed. It is also related to whether or not there is complete remission after medication. Usually it may be more than 2 years. Otherwise, the possibility of relapse is high.
