In patients with postoperative delirium, supportive treatment is generally given, including maintenance of water-electrolyte balance and appropriate nutritional supplements. Appropriate environmental control is recommended throughout the patient’s altered mental status, and adequate support is also given to the patient, who should be given strong cues of day and night. During the daytime lights should be kept on and will create an environment of activity, at night the lights should be dimmed and the living room should be quiet and soft. Psychotropic medications are given to address the patient’s psychiatric symptoms. To avoid medications that deepen the impairment of consciousness, small doses of short-term treatment should be given as much as possible. Antipsychotics, such as haloperidol, may be considered first for other medications, such as olanzapine, because of their mild side effects such as drowsiness and hypotension.
