Slow movements and hand tremors, then even non-specialists would think of Parkinson’s disease. Yes, the most common specific symptom of Parkinson’s disease is hand tremors. But there are many causes of hand tremors: hyperthyroidism, stress, idiopathic tremor, fatigue, certain medications, cervical medullary lesions, and other diseases of the brain …… can all cause hand tremors. So how can people with hand tremors tell if they have Parkinson’s disease? According to one study, doctors in non-specialist clinics diagnosed Parkinson’s disease with a misdiagnosis rate of 47%, nearly half. This shows that the disease can be quite confusing at times. A detailed history is taken, including the onset and progression of hand tremors, precipitating factors, and any clumsy or slow movements. Thereafter, the patient will be asked about constipation, whether the nose can detect smells, and sleep, especially if there is any so-called RBD such as sleep talking, fidgeting or even aggressive behavior during sleep. A brief assessment of the patient’s intelligence and mood will also be made. Physical examination: The patient will be asked to perform some examinations that are not commonly performed by patients with other diseases, such as asking the patient to perform relative and unfolding movements of the thumb and index finger, asking the patient to beat the movement with the foot, and also asking the patient to stand still and pull the patient’s shoulder backwards to see if he is stable. We will also use a kind of testing device that our team has successfully developed to detect the speed of finger movement and reaction speed of patients with high sensitivity, so that the condition of many patients who had no abnormalities in the previous examination can be clearly examined. Next are some important equipment and blood tests, such as cranial CT or MRI, thyroid function tests, etc., mainly to rule out those diseases that resemble Parkinson’s disease but are not Parkinson’s disease. Finally, the Parkinson’s disease specialist will carefully deduce and reasonably analyze all the relevant information to achieve accurate diagnosis and precise treatment. In this way, the diagnostic accuracy of Parkinson’s disease can be improved, and the efficacy of treatment will rise.
