Evaluation of school performance in children with benign epilepsy with spikes in the central temporal region

Miziara et al. from the University of São Paulo, Brazil, evaluated the school performance of children with benign epilepsy with central temporal spikes (BECT) and published the results in the January 2012 issue of the journal Seizure. The study included 40 children with a diagnosis of BECT and assessed the differences in school performance, neuropsychological tests and language test results between the children and controls. The results of the study found that children with BECT had worse results in school performance and auditory processing tests compared to controls; the frequency of epileptic discharges did not affect these results. This study indicates that children with BECT are more likely to have learning disabilities, which are mainly due to auditory attention disorders.
