The disease that we are going to talk to you about today often makes people fearful of it. So, how scary is this disease? It is known that the patient will lose consciousness, twitch, foam at the mouth and have repeated attacks. Prolonged seizures can lead to accidents, suicide, and even sudden and inexplicable death. Patients suffering from this disease are tormented worse than death. There are many famous people who have suffered from this disease: Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Nobel, Socrates, etc. What kind of disease is this? How can we cope with such a terrible disease? In this regard, “Three Lives” invited Professor Wang Yunpeng, deputy chief physician of functional neurosurgery at Xuanwu Hospital of Capital Medical University, to unravel the mystery for us. What are the triggering factors for the appearance of epilepsy? Traumatic brain injury is a predisposing factor for epilepsy and a very important one. Mr. Wang suggested that it is easy to ignore traumatic brain injury such as concussion, and always think that it is not a matter if you touch it and do not feel it. The lack of attention after a concussion, heavy intake of alcohol and lack of rest can lead to aggravation of the condition. This can lead to early memory loss and a decline in brain function, resulting in brain hemorrhage and scar formation, among other things. The most horrible thing is the formation of neurological scars, which makes the brain’s discharge irregular and affects the body’s functions. Congenital malnutrition of the brain may also lead to seizures. The impact of epilepsy on the patient is tremendous, including the psychological and physical stress. Children with epilepsy are particularly poor learners. As an example, epilepsy is the equivalent of putting a child in a workshop to recite a text, and the child’s learning ability is inevitably reduced. The disruption of epileptic brain waves is the equivalent of the interference of workshop noise to the child, who simply cannot concentrate on learning. For diagnosing epilepsy, Wang pointed out that the EEG is used to make the determination. Doctors will observe abnormal and irregular line waves of the brain waves and large outbreaks of line fluctuations. Therefore, the epilepsy caused great distress to the life of patients, must pay attention to not strenuous exercise and into the oxygen-deficient environment to ensure life safety.
