What are the common ways to remove a thyroid swelling?

The traditional thyroid surgery leaves a 5-6 cm surgical scar on the neck and cuts off the dermal nerve, causing postoperative neck discomfort and abnormal sensation, which causes a great psychological burden to female patients. In recent years, lumpectomy has made great progress in many fields, and thyroid surgery is no exception, with certain foundation and conditions. There are three common clinical approaches for thyroid mass resection, namely conventional resection, complete lumpectomy and lumpectomy-assisted thyroid mass resection. The traditional technique is relatively simple but often leaves a 5-6 cm long incision in the neck after surgery, which affects the cosmetic effect; complete lumpectomy does not leave a surgical scar in the neck after surgery and has a better cosmetic effect, but both the transmammary, axillary and clavicular approaches are more damaging due to longer paths and extensive subcutaneous separation, and the technical operation is difficult and has many postoperative complications, which is not in line with the purpose of minimally invasive surgery. The Miccoli procedure is in between these two procedures and has significantly better cosmetic results than the traditional procedure, with small incisions and a low and inconspicuous position; compared to fully lumpectomy, the surgical approach is short, less traumatic and technically difficult and free of air cavity.
