Most infants infected with HIV will die before the age of three due to various opportunistic infections and complications, with a small percentage of infants living into their teens. Therefore, HIV-positive women are advised to avoid pregnancy because once pregnant, about 1/3 of HIV-positive mothers can transmit the virus to their fetus or baby through various means, such as during pregnancy and childbirth and during postpartum breastfeeding. If an HIV-positive woman insists on becoming pregnant, it is important to consult with a hospital experienced in HIV treatment before conceiving to minimize the chance of mother-to-child transmission.
