There are many causes of coughing at night in young children, and the common one is upper respiratory cough syndrome. The main reason is that at night the baby sleeps in a recumbent position. If the nasal mucosa is stimulated by heat, cold, odor or infection, causing an increase in secretions, the resulting secretions will flow backwards through the nasal tract to the pharynx, thus stimulating the mucous membrane of the throat and giving rise to a reflex cough, which is therefore also clinically known as postnasal leakage syndrome. When these symptoms occur, first of all, respiratory tract infections should be excluded, which can be investigated by lung auscultation and related examinations. Secondly, treatment can be done by maintaining a certain slope of sleeping position with head and shoulders padded, and by nasal cleansing before bedtime to reduce the exudation of secretions and achieve the purpose of reducing pharyngeal irritation.
