How important is the resting position for TMJ disorders

The resting position is not for you to rest. The resting position, which I have mentioned repeatedly in previous articles, the posture of the cervical spine, the position of the jaw when not speaking, the position of the tongue, all of these are closely related to the development of this disease, and the patient is required to correct these problems back during the treatment process. When Director Tsai was in Taiwan, there was a senior physiotherapist from the Department of Physical Therapy of National Taiwan University, who specializes in the difficult and complicated diseases that physiotherapists in Taiwan cannot handle. She is known throughout Taiwan as the Old Master. Modern medicine is no longer just about treating the headache and the foot, but about enlarging the horizon and looking at the entire body’s functional structure to find out where the main problems lie. Poor cervical posture and jaw resting position can cause fatigue of the masticatory muscles and disorder of the internal structure of the joints, so the resting position of these two is what we should emphasize most. The cervical spine, for the spine, its entire curvature is the most perfect and labor-saving structure evolved by human beings for millions of years, and modern people sit and watch computers all day long, and bad posture has caused enough cervical and lumbar spine problems, the correct posture should be very upright for the whole person, no hunchback, no belly, no pouting. To break it down to the cervical spine, the neck should be straight, the chin slightly tucked in, the shoulders relaxed, and the earlobes should be in a vertical line with the shoulders when viewed from the side. People with good posture feel comfortable how they look, while people with bad posture, many chronic diseases will also gradually find you. The resting position of the jaw and tongue is about the whole masticatory muscle system. The correct resting position is for the upper and lower teeth to be slightly separated by 2-3mm and for the chin to drop naturally, maintained by the length of the skin and muscles, rather than the contraction of the biting muscles to lift the chin upward. The specific practice is: open the mouth first, relax the tongue softly and stick it behind the lower teeth, the more relaxed the tongue is the thicker and softer it is, then the tongue slowly closes the mouth with the jaw behind the lower teeth, the thick tongue will first stick to the back of the upper teeth and the palate during the closing process, the upper front 1/3 of the tongue naturally stick to the back of the upper incisors and the front platform of the palate, the thick tongue is enough to maintain the upper and lower teeth separated by 2-3mm, putting the mouth of saliva and air from the sides of the tongue backward, keeping the jaw unmoving, just lifting the hyoid bone, swallowing saliva, and holding the tongue without air in the mouth. The wet tongue provides a certain amount of surface tension, maintaining a relative vacuum between the teeth and the palate in interdependence, and the lips are gently closed. In this state, the muscles around the joints and the tongue muscles are at their most relaxed and the joints are at their least internal pressure. We assess the resting position of patients in the outpatient clinic, and we teach them patiently because indeed this is a very critical point in the whole treatment, and being able to learn it well is a lot of help for the whole treatment. If it is difficult to understand, just take out the magazine and look at the celebrities, or think about the flight attendants when they do not show their teeth smile, their oral state is what we call the rest position. If not in the resting position, the teeth are too close together, the jaw is short, the face is not in proportion, and the jaw will recede slightly, affecting the appearance. Now take out the mirror, look at yourself in the mirror, make these changes, take a deep breath, find the most relaxed state, don’t you feel more beautiful in appearance and more elegant in your grooming at the same time? It is always difficult to change at the beginning, people are used to the wrong posture before, but what you are used to is not right, it has more or less brought you existing problems, so it is important to break the existing wrong balance and return to the most correct posture. It takes two weeks to learn and consolidate a new posture, may you persevere and communicate with your body repeatedly to find the way to take control of changing your body and make it listen to you.
