In our daily outpatient work, we find that many parents struggle with how to give their babies eye medication, often the parents are tired and sweaty, and their children are crying and hoarse, but the eye medication has not been ordered in. So, how exactly is the correct way to give baby medicine? First, as parents themselves in the emotional relaxation. In fact, nowadays eye medicines are very well made, the irritation of the drops is very small, the baby will not feel much pain. We pay attention to the method when ordering eye medicine, do not let the baby to order eye medicine aversion emotions, the baby will not hate to order eye medicine. A, the correct way to point medicine: 1, in order to prevent cross-infection, before and after the point eye medicine, should clean hands. Especially for babies suffering from “pink eye”, to prevent the contamination of the hands or eye medicine bottle mouth contamination, the bacteria and viruses brought to the baby’s healthy eyes or adult eyes, resulting in infection. 2, before using the drug should check the name of the drug, production date, expiration date, so as to avoid the use of expired drugs. And carefully read the instructions for use of drugs. Do not order the wrong drops, mistakenly put other drops such as nasal drops, oral drops, or even foot drops (this type of incident did happen!) Do not put drops into the baby’s eyes. If such an emergency occurs, you should flush your eyes with water as soon as possible and go to the hospital promptly. 3, easy to precipitate the suspension should be fully shaken before dropping. 4, such as eye with secretions or eye ointment, should first wipe away with a sterile cotton swab, and then drops of eye drops. 5.When applying eye drops, have the child sit in a supine or sitting position with the head slightly tilted back and the eyes looking upward. Parents use their left thumb or cotton swab to gently pick open the child’s lower lid, hold the eye drops bottle in the right hand, and dab the eye drops in the space between the lower eyelid and the eye. Ask the child to close the eyes for 1-2 minutes to fill the entire surface of the eye with eye drops. Do not put the eye drops directly on the black eye because the cornea on the surface of the black eye is very sensitive and the eye drops will feel uncomfortable. Eye drops bottle do not touch the eyelids, eyeballs and eyelashes, if touched, the baby will reflexively close the eyes, we can only pick the baby’s eyes harder, the baby harder to resist, and eventually adults are sweating, children cry, eye drops can not be ordered in. 6, the time to apply eye ointment is usually before the baby sleeps, the same technique as the point drops. After gently peeling back the child’s lower lid, hold the eye ointment bottle and squeeze a rice-sized amount of medication directly into the lower eyelid. Keep the baby’s eyes closed to help the eye ointment dissolve and distribute in the conjunctival sac, and wipe the ointment from the lid margin and eyelashes with a cotton swab or cotton ball. If it is really difficult to order eye drops for your little one, we can put on more eye ointment. Because little ones sleep for a long time, putting on eye ointment during each long nap can also serve the same therapeutic purpose. When your little one is asleep, gently peel back the lower eyelid and squeeze in a little eye ointment the size of a grain of rice. 7. For small uncooperative infants and children, two people are required to work together, with the operator and the assistant sitting opposite each other, the child lying on his back on the assistant’s knees, the two legs being held under the assistant’s two armpits, the head fixed between the operator’s knees, the assistant holding the child’s two arms and body, and the position fixed, then the drops can be applied. You can also put the child on his back on the bed or table, let one person fix his arms, upper body and legs, and another person fix his head with his hands, and then the operator will give him the medicine. Note: 1. Be gentle when dispensing eye medication and do not compress the eyeball. 2, do not put eye drops directly on the cornea, because the corneal sensitivity caused by the reflex to close the eye, the eye drug out. 3, eye drops 1 drop at a time. Some parents say that a few more drops each time, is it faster to get better? In fact, the conjunctival sac can only hold up to 20 microliters of medication. Generally speaking, the volume of 1 drop of eye drops is about 30-40 microliters, so 1 drop at a time is enough. Moreover, an overdose of drops will also increase the stimulation of preservatives on the cornea and conjunctiva, causing an increase in tear secretion, which in turn reduces the concentration of the drug. 4, eye drops should be 3 ~ 5cm from the eye, so as not to touch the eyelashes contamination of the bottle, or once the child shakes his head violently touch the eye. 5, there are systemic reactions to drugs such as atropine and other eye points, should be compressed for 2-3 minutes after the lacrimal sac to prevent the drug through the tear ducts into the tear sac and nasal cavity after absorption through the mucosa and cause systemic toxic reactions, more attention should be paid to the compression of small children. 6, to the baby point more than two kinds of eye medicine, each eye medicine interval 3-5 minutes. 7.If the child’s eye redness and swelling worsens, he/she feels discomfort such as stinging, itching or burning sensation in the eyes or the child cries for no reason after ordering the medicine, it should be discontinued immediately and the child should go to the hospital promptly. Secondly, be sure to follow the doctor’s instructions, do not just increase the frequency of medication, prolong the duration of medication, especially the abuse of antibiotics, hormonal eye drops can cause harm to the baby’s eyes. The first hazard: dry eye, baby symptoms are blinking, squeezing or the original blinking, squeezing more frequently, eye redness, burning sensation. As most eye drops contain preservatives, and the antimicrobial itself can cause damage to the conjunctival cupped cells of the eye, the normal tear film on the surface is unstable and prone to rupture and evaporation. This can lead to dry eye disease, red, dry or painful eyes, and the more you order eye drops, the more dry and painful your eyes become. Hazard two: hormonal glaucoma. The indications for hormonal eye drops are very strict and should be applied strictly under the guidance of a doctor and discontinued and reviewed in a timely manner. This drug is like a “double-edged sword”, when used properly, it will quickly relieve the symptoms and improve the condition, but when used improperly, it can have serious consequences. If used excessively, it can cause hormonal glaucoma in babies, resulting in high intraocular pressure, reduced vision, and even irreversible damage to the optic nerve.
