The ancients said, “Food and sex are also sex.” In other words, both appetite and sexual desire are the nature of human beings. Those who cannot control their appetite and become addicted to excessive intake are overeaters, while those who cannot control their sexual appetite and overindulge are sex addicts. Sex addicts are actually a psychological disorder, a compulsion related to sexual behavior, they will be unconsciously very eager to have sex, and difficult to control. Robert Ian F. Brown, who works in addiction research, says, “Sex addiction is the same as any other type of addiction. People with sex addiction use sexual action as a way to regulate their mood and escape from reality. Although the number of times someone actually puts it into action may not be very high, the thought is constant throughout the day and night, and it also causes distress to the person. Once addicted to sex, one generally indulges in a variety of sex-related activities.” Many people think that sex addicts are the same as “pornographers” or “exhibitionists,” but in fact, not all sex addicts engage in such behavior. Psychologists have given three levels of definition of “sex addiction”: Level 1: Behavior that is not offensive to others. For example, masturbation can be tolerated by society. Level 2: Some sexual activities that violate others. For example, exposing the genitals in front of the opposite sex or peeking at the private parts of the opposite sex. Level 3: Criminal acts. Such as rape, incest, and sexual abuse of children. Sexual addiction is mainly caused by two aspects. There may be endocrine abnormalities, such as increased secretion of adrenaline or increased secretion of androgens. Possible causes include adrenal tumors, pituitary tumors, etc. These causes lead to endocrine abnormalities, resulting in the manifestation of symptoms of sexual addiction. It may be caused by bad experiences in childhood, especially after childhood abuse, tragically appearing symptoms and manifestations of sex addiction in adulthood, frequently asking for sex or even through sex to achieve the purpose of satisfying and venting desire, etc. Sexual addiction has not been accepted as an official disease by academia. For sex addiction treatment, you must first face up to yourself and find the root cause. If it is an endocrine disorder, promptly seek medical attention, and if it is due to a psychological disorder, assist in a psychologist to develop a specific treatment plan.
