Why choose tapering laminated stents for aortic coarctation

In endoluminal repair of aortic coarctation, the head end of the overlapping stent is located in the aortic arch and the tail end is located in the true lumen of the descending aorta. The diameter of the aortic arch is significantly larger than the diameter of the true lumen of the descending aorta. If an overmolded stent without a tapering design is selected, the true lumen of the descending aorta will be enlarged and even a new breach will occur, as shown by the arrow in the figure above. In our experience, the head end of the selected overmolded stent should be at least 6 mm larger than the tail end, which avoids this complication. With the tapering overlapping stent, the CT at 1 year postoperatively is shown on the left, and the CT at 3 years postoperatively is shown on the right, showing no dilatation of the unend of the overlapping stent.
