Borderline personality disorder and bipolar disorder belong to different disorder types and it is difficult to compare the difficulty of treatment, but both are disorders that are somewhat difficult to treat.
Psychotherapy is the main treatment for borderline personality disorder, supplemented by medication. Through psychotherapy, patients are helped to understand themselves, learn how to deal with emotional trauma, regulate negative emotions, establish effective interpersonal relationships and learn how to endure the inevitable pain in life; emotional instability can be improved by using mood stabilisers, and antidepressants can be used for depressed moods. If there are significant anxiety and sleep problems, benzodiazepines may be given and low dose antipsychotics may help control impulsive and aggressive behaviour.
Bipolar disorder is treated primarily with medication, supplemented by a combination of electroconvulsive therapy, psychotherapy and crisis intervention.
