How to Prevent Age-Related Macular Degeneration (AMD)

The exact cause of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is not particularly well understood, making it difficult to have an allopathic approach to treatment. However, numerous studies have shown that the occurrence of AMD is associated with genetics, environmental factors such as long-term exposure to ultraviolet light, environmental pollution, smoking, and decreased blood antioxidant levels. In response to these causative factors, scientists have proposed the following preventive measures: The occurrence of AMD may be genetically related, so if someone in the family has AMD, the rest of the family should have regular fundus examinations if they are over 50 years old. AMD may be associated with long-term UV exposure, and it is recommended to wear sunglasses when going out in strong sunlight. Since vegetables and fruits contain large amounts of antioxidants such as trace elements, multivitamins, lutein, etc., it is recommended to eat more vegetables and fruits. Fish contains a large amount of unsaturated fatty acids, which have strong antioxidant capacity, and it is recommended to eat more of them. It is recommended to take a variety of nutraceuticals with antioxidant power, especially rich in lutein and zeaxanthin. Multicenter clinical studies have shown that long-term use of a combination of eye care drugs containing lutein, trace elements of zinc and multivitamins, and unsaturated fatty acids can help prevent the development of AMD. Studies have shown that the occurrence of AMD is associated with hypertension and hyperlipidemia; therefore, it is important to actively prevent hypertension and hyperlipidemia, eat less overly oily foods, and strengthen exercise to help prevent AMD or slow its development. Studies have shown that there is a very clear correlation between smoking and the occurrence of AMD, therefore, it is recommended to quit smoking. With the advent of an aging society in China, the number of AMD patients is increasing, and it has become a disease that seriously affects the quality of life of middle-aged and elderly patients in China. However, the occurrence of severe AMD can be reduced through active preventive measures!
