The main symptom of age-related macular degeneration is a loss of central vision and a black shadow in the center of the visual field. This may not be a problem when you see things with both eyes, but when you see things with one eye, black shadows appear in your field of vision. In addition, your vision may become distorted, straight lines may become curved, horizontal lines may become wavy, etc., and images that were originally very beautiful may look distorted. In addition, the contrast of the image decreases, and instead of a bright and clear image, the image becomes gray and hard to distinguish. Age-related macular degeneration is classified as dry or wet. Dry macular degeneration is mainly characterized by atrophy of the retinal pigment epithelium in the form of a map, and the patient’s main symptom is a decrease in the acuity of central vision; wet macular degeneration is characterized by choroidal neovascularization that grows under the pigment epithelium, which may be accompanied by exudation and hemorrhage, and may cause severe visual impairment. There is no specific treatment for dry macular degeneration, mainly from the diet and lifestyle to improve: such as ensure vitamin C intake, oral lutein, quit smoking, control blood sugar and blood pressure; avoid prolonged exposure to bright light, early screening, found to have wet macular degeneration progression of timely treatment to slow down the progress of the disease. At present, wet macular degeneration is mainly treated with photodynamic therapy and Ranibizumab vitreous injection, both of which are aimed at destroying the growth of neovascularization. Photodynamic therapy is an intravenous injection of photosensitizer, when the drug is attached to the neovascularization, the photosensitizer is excited by laser, and the photosensitizer in the excited state transmits the energy to the surrounding oxygen, generating highly reactive singlet oxygen, which undergoes oxidation reaction with the neighboring macromolecules and produces cytotoxic effect, which leads to the damage of the cells or even their deaths, and thus eliminates the neovascularization. The whole body should be strictly protected from light after the treatment. Ranibizumab is a kind of anti-neovascular growth factor drug marketed in recent years, which destroys the growth of neovascularization by inhibiting the production of neovascular growth factor, and reduces bleeding caused by exudation and neovascularization. Currently a course of three injections is given once a month. Wet macular degeneration should be detected early, diagnosed early and treated early.
