If the patient is found to have a small pneumothorax on physical examination, the doctor will usually not treat it specifically. However, if the patient develops recurrent spontaneous pneumothorax due to a pulmonary blister, or if the patient has difficulty breathing due to the large size of the blister, surgery is required.
