The cause of the cough needs to be sought. Blood tests, blood sedimentation, C-reactive protein and chest x-ray can be performed. Through blood and image analysis, if the cough is caused by a viral infection, symptomatic treatment with antiviral drugs such as ribavirin can be used. If the cough is caused by a bacterial infection, it can be treated symptomatically with antibiotic drugs, such as penicillins, cephalosporins, macrolides and quinolones. If cough caused by tuberculosis is considered, sputum culture, sputum for Mycobacterium tuberculosis and chest CT can be performed. For patients with high suspicion of tuberculosis or a clear diagnosis of tuberculosis, it is recommended to go to a regular specialist hospital for treatment. If lung cancer is considered, intensive CT of the chest, lung tumor markers, bronchofiberscopy and other examinations are recommended. For patients with a clear diagnosis of lung cancer, early surgery is recommended, while radiotherapy and chemotherapy are recommended for those without surgical indications.
