Prolactinopituitary tumors do not have to be treated surgically. If the tumor is relatively small as a microadenoma, i.e., if the size of the tumor is <1 cm, and there is no compression by surrounding tissues, oral medication can be considered first. The main oral medication is dopamine agonist bromocriptine, which can reduce the secretion of prolactin and relieve the symptoms of hyperprolactinemia, and can reduce the size of the tumor by nearly 1/2. If the tumor is large, i.e. a macroadenoma, >1cm in size, with symptoms of compression of surrounding tissues, surgery is recommended.
